3 Considerations When Designing A Logo

Designing a logo is one of the most important parts of branding because it should be easy to associate with your business and help you stand out among similar businesses. Remembering a few key factors during the design process will help you create a logo you love for many years to come.

1. Use Graphics That Make Sense

It is common to see businesses with graphics integrated into their logo, but in order for it to be effective, it must make sense. For example, if you had a business called XYZ Art Supply, you would not incorporate puppies or fireworks into the design, because it obviously does not match the goal of your business. You might have two paintbrushes that create the letter "X," and those paintbrushes could drip paint to create the remaining wording for your logo.

When incorporating graphics into your logo, you will also need to consider simplicity, how the graphic scales, and what it looks like in color and black and white. A graphic with many details will likely become obscured when the graphic is scaled-down to fit on a business card. Relying too much on color can cause a graphic to lose its message when it is printed in black and white.

2. Be Careful With Typography

Having fancy fonts can seem fun and attractive when you are designing a logo, but in many cases, fancier fonts do not translate well in reality. At worse, a font, especially those written in script, can appear to say something different than your business name if you are not careful. Use script and other fancier fonts sparingly. It is best to stick with fonts that are difficult to misread.

When you have a few samples of different fonts for your logo, look at them with different spacing and in different sizes to be certain nothing becomes obscured. For some companies, just using a font for their business can be the most simplistic logo, such as a first and last initial for personal branding.

3. Have Fun With Color

Although you will not rely on color for your logo to be effective, incorporating color can help tie your logo into the rest of your branding. The color palette you choose should be cohesive across your website, social media, logo, and storefront (if applicable). Color can be used to make a statement about your business because many colors are associated with various emotions.

For example, red is often considered a color of power, whereas purple is often considered regal. Red could easily be incorporated into a logo for a lawyer, who may want their logo to be interpreted as showing strength in the courtroom, whereas a home health care agency would do better if they incorporated a soft blue for sincerity.

Of course, other businesses, especially those in the arts or those whose goal is to stand out from the crowd may want to have a little more fun by utilizing an eclectic mix of colors, as long as their logo is still readable.
